very advanced broadleaved styling workshop #5

The only conifer of the whole collection, a crappy Pinus nigra Austriaca. Well, it is not all that crappy, but not so good either. There must be better pines in Croatia!

  1. Are you sure it's Austriaca? I would've thought it was rather Pinus nigra ssp. dalmatica.

  2. I am sure it's Austriaca. P. n. Dalmatica has much shorter needles. Just because a pine is found in Dalmatia does not make it that subspecies.

  3. Oh, I think that if it's collected in Dalmatia it's a pretty safe bet that it's dalmatica. The needles don't differ so much. One would have to do a genetic analysis to tell them apart with significant degree of certainty. Or test it's hardiness (dalmatica is a little less hardy) though that could prove to be a lethal experiment. ;-)
